In many industries, products and manufacturing processes that are more sustainable is becoming more and more important. In the field of self-adhesive media, the movement towards eco-friendliness represents a major challenge. The problem is obvious: Plastic and therefore self-adhesive films are generally challenging in regards to their eco-friendliness. However, it is difficult to avoid them completely in everyday life. For example in book protection films, PVC (polyvinyl chloride) has many advantages towards other materials and is easy to work with. Nevertheless, Neschen has developed many product alternatives on the basis of PP (polypropylene) instead of PVC over the years. This way, customers can choose a suitable product depending on each individual application. Additionally, Neschen works with solvent-free acrylate adhesives and ensures that all raw materials are free of harmful additives.
But what exactly is the difference between PVC and PP?
After PE (polyethylene) and PP, PVC is the third most important polymer for plastics. PVC is divided into hard and soft PVC. Many users prefer PVC films because they are softer and more elastic and therefore easier to process. PP is recognised as an eco-friendlier alternative because it is a simply structured synthetic material and also a “by-product” of the petrol industry. This resource is put to good use in the form of protecting or mounting films.
Over the years, Neschen has developed alternatives on the basis of PP for virtually every application (digital print, protection and mounting films). PP films are a little more difficult to work with because they are less flexible. Cutting through the material is also a little more difficult than cutting through the PVC version.

At this years FESPA, Neschen Coating GmBH is presenting a creative bike cafe. In addition to its top sellers, the company is presenting product innovations such as a new hybrid mounting film for difficult substrates, currently the only solution of this kind on the market
Bike cafes are conquering cities as a popular cycling destination. In addition to instant service and a cozy backdrop for a pit stop, the popular cafes offer a shop area with bicycle accessories and spare parts. For FESPA 2020 in Madrid, Neschen Coating GmbH is following this trend and presents an exhibition booth in the style of a bike café with an industrial design theme. FESPA Global Print Expo is expected to attract over 18,000 industry professionals in four days—from the 24th to the 27th of March 2020. It is Europe’s largest international trade exhibition for the digital printing industry.
Besides just coffee, there is much else to discover in Neschen’s bicycle cafe. The booth features minimalistic industrial design elements made of brick, concrete, wood, iron and corrugated sheet metal and—just like an authentic bike café—with a sitting area and workshop area. With new hybrid adhesive film even demanding substrates can be equipped with self-adhesive properties
In addition to already established products, Neschen is presenting new product developments such as gudy® 806 hybrid. The film is a unique solution, created to equip challenging substrates with self-adhesive properties, guaranteeing a long-term and reliable bond.
The new gudy® hybrid film is the only solution of this kind on the market: Even challenging materials can now be equipped with self-adhesive properties.
This mounting film is ideal for demanding or heavy materials such as textiles, tarpaulins or foam boards. In the cafés workshop area, the Bueckeburg-based company presents one of its high-performance laminators: The Neschen ColdLam 1650. At the upcoming Printing United tradeshow in Dallas, Onyx Graphics, inc. will be providing a first glimpse of the next version release of ONYX Hub, the company's business intelligence tool for wide-format print. While many marketers use window decals for their winter promotions, floor graphic films are often not incorporated into campaigns. However, the floor is one of the best areas to place advertising in stores - after all, everybody tends to glance to the floor when trying to make their way through the frenzied Christmas shopping crowd.
Tips for working with floor graphic films
Selecting the right adhesive strength
For difficult surfaces such as asphalt, concrete, wood, carpet or paving stones, a high-tack solution is best because it ensures optimum adhesion. A high-tack film is also the better choice when working with surfaces that have wide joints. For "normal" floors, floor films or floor graphics compounds with standard adhesives are good options. The easiest way for a perfect application is to select films that guarantee a bubble-free application.
Slip Resistance
In public areas, a certified clip resistance is absolutely necessary. When choosing a material, it is paramount that the film's slip resistance properties have been properly tested by a lab an official certificate has been issued. In order to achieve the specified slip resistance, some floor graphic films must additionally be laminated with a protective film after printing. However, you can save yourself the cost and time if you choose films that remain non-slip certified after printing - even without a protective laminate
Fire Protection Certification
In addition to ant-slip properties, films used for floor advertising must also have fire protection certification (e.g. European standard EN 13501-1).
Durability
When choosing floor graphic films you should check whether they are suitable for short or long term promotions. For long-term applications, films with protective laminates are more suitable as they protect the inks from abrasion. Directly printable non-slip films are a good solution from a time frame of several weeks.

Applying stickers in extreme outdoor conditions
For most retailers and brands, self-adhesive decals are a big part of their Christmas marketing campaign. After all, it is a fast and easy way to get your message out. Although the holiday season is a great time of year to advertise, you also have to deal with an unavoidable factor: the weather. It is often forgotten that when applying stickers, the temperature is essential for good adhesion. This applies to the outdoor temperature as well as the temperature of the substrate. Temperatures that are too low can negatively affect adhesion. This could turn into a problem when applying your stickers on the outside of shop windows during winter
Tips for outdoor application:
- Dry method at a minimum of 5 degrees centigrade (10 degrees centigrade would be better) is essential.
- In extremely cold temperatures, it is best to apply the decals in the afternoon, as it is warmer.
- Make sure that the surface is properly cleaned and free of grease and dust.
- The substrate should be completely dry and free of condensation, otherwise, the moisture might freeze.
- For 12-24 hours after application, it is important that the temperature does not fall below 5 degrees centigrade. During that time frame, it is also paramount for the decals not to come in contact with rain.
The best method: Applying window graphics from inside
Since many factors have to be considered when applying the window graphics from the outside, it is best to apply the graphics from the inside. Not only does this protect the ads from vandalism, it also protects them from weather exposure. Additionally, the application is a whole lot easier, since the window's temperature does not fall too low on the inside. This makes the application process a lot less complicated. In order for the ads to be seen from the outside, mirror image printing should be used. For this type of application, easy dot and window grip solutions from Neschen are excellent choices
