Picture framing can be a challenge when presented with a variety of materials: Valuable original artworks or historical documents require a different approach than photographs. Nevertheless, every project deserves reliable solutions. Discover our overview of picture framing essentials, ideal for the professional picture framer.
Framing of original artworks, reproductions and photographs
By framing a picture, its decorative effect is emphasised and the picture transforms into a focal point on the wall. For best results, the material, size and colour of the frame should match the creative vision of its creator or the customer and should therefore be chosen carefully. When selecting a frame, the whole interior design should be taken into consideration including the colour scheme and the layout of the room.
Securing the artworks value long term
The material of the frame should match the value of the picture. A high-quality picture deserves a high-quality frame. Secure the value of the artwork by professionally framing it with reliable materials.
Protecting the picture again environmental factors
To ensure that a picture is preserved over many decades, protection against natural and mechanical environmental influences should always be the main focus of picture framing. Professional framing protects the artwork from moisture, dirt, dust and fingerprints.
Picture framing with mats
Enhancing the look of a framed piece
The material, colour and thickness of mat/passe-parout gives the picture an individual note. The choice of the mat's material and colour depends on personal taste, the colour scheme of the picture as well as the frame. Mats are available with varying degrees of thickness and thus create different visual effects and varying degrees of depth.
Mats underline the look of the frame and draw the eye to the framed piece even more. By Incorporating at mat, an image can be staged in a whole new way.
Protecting the artwork
A passe-partout creates a space between the picture and the glass of the frame. The surface of the picture has no direct contact with the glass and is therefore better protected. In addition, a passe-partout regulates the level of moisture within the framing by absorbing it and thus minimising its damaging impact on the picture.
Products for the picture framer
Self-adhesive takes and the passe-partout
Filmoplast tapes are a high-quality adhesive solution that meets the high demands of museums and archives. The product range includes a variety of self-adhesive tapes that meet the most diverse requirements in picture framing. For example the product Filmoplast P and P90, with their slightly alkaline adhesive, are ideal for mounting pictures behind the mat with so-called t-hinge. Filmoplast SH is excellent for creating a reliable hinge to mount the passe-partout to the mountboard. Filmoplast T creates a dust-proof seal in the back of the frame. To repair and restore paper, Filmoplast R is an excellent choice.
Reasons for using Filmoplast tapes
- Acid, solvent and phthalate-free
- Resistant to ageing
- Permanently elastic
- No breakthrough after bonding to the substrate
- Practical adhesive tape format in a handy dispenser box (including cutting knife)
- No water required to activate the adhesive
T-hinge made easy with self-adhesive tapes: When choosing tapes, it is important that the products do not damage the picture. Products such as Filmoplast P and Filmoplast P 90 therefore have a slightly alkaline adhesive.
Gudy® films for mounting onboard materials
To frame a picture professionally, there are a variety of useful products and materials available. These also include the double-sided adhesive and paper-based products Gudy® 831 Fine Art smooth and Gudy® 832 Fine Art textured. So many different interiors, so many different surfaces. As an interior decorator, shopfitter or sign maker, you regularly face challenges when it comes to walls. Not every surface needs the same adhesion performance. In some cases, you have to deal with several types of surfaces within a single project – for example for the design of numerous shops of a retail chain. In this case, the application surfaces of the various shop interiors can vary widely and it may not always be possible to choose one and the same film. Not all films are suited for materials like structured walls (e.g. with a spack-spraying structure), concrete, chipboard or painted walls.
When you have to deal with various substrates in single a project, it is always wise to test a small piece of film for its adhesive strength on the designated surface. If you want more certainty regarding the adhesion of your film, choose a film with a high-tack adhesion, such as solvoprint® performance wall-grip. This film features a high-tack adhesive that is suitable for various challenging surfaces, such as rough interior walls, smooth and dry concrete, chipboard, polypropylene or other difficult surfaces
High-tack adhesive suitable for difficult surfaces
The StickerCompany in Eindhoven, in the Netherlands, regularly faces projects with challenging surfaces. Customers often ask whether their wall finish is suitable for applying stickers. This was also the case with a client, who wanted to add new signage to their business interior. The building featured many different surfaces, varying from varnished wood to structured walls with a spack-spraying finish. In order to get a clear picture of the situation, the StickerCompany asked for photos to be sent.
This allowed Tinus Kouwenberg, owner of the company, to make a decision as to which film would be suitable. Because of their good experience with solvoprint® performance wall-grip, this choice was easily made. The material has a high-tack adhesive that offers an ideal grip on difficult to adhere to substrates, such as concrete, chipboard or structured walls.
The design of the decals consists of fine details and line work, which was no problem for this film either. After the design was printed with a Canon Colorado, the signage was effortlessly cut into shape and then applied to various places in the building. Simply applying the film with the pressure of a squeegee sufficed to get a good adhesion.Posted: March 03, 2020||

While many marketers use window decals for their winter promotions, floor graphic films are often not incorporated into campaigns. However, the floor is one of the best areas to place advertising in stores - after all, everybody tends to glance to the floor when trying to make their way through the frenzied Christmas shopping crowd.
Tips for working with floor graphic films
Selecting the right adhesive strength
For difficult surfaces such as asphalt, concrete, wood, carpet or paving stones, a high-tack solution is best because it ensures optimum adhesion. A high-tack film is also the better choice when working with surfaces that have wide joints. For "normal" floors, floor films or floor graphics compounds with standard adhesives are good options. The easiest way for a perfect application is to select films that guarantee a bubble-free application.
In public areas, a certified clip resistance is absolutely necessary. When choosing a material, it is paramount that the film's slip resistance properties have been properly tested by a lab an official certificate has been issued. In order to achieve the specified slip resistance, some floor graphic films must additionally be laminated with a protective film after printing. However, you can save yourself the cost and time if you choose films that remain non-slip certified after printing - even without a protective laminate
Fire Protection Certification
In addition to ant-slip properties, films used for floor advertising must also have fire protection certification (e.g. European standard EN 13501-1).
When choosing floor graphic films you should check whether they are suitable for short or long term promotions. For long-term applications, films with protective laminates are more suitable as they protect the inks from abrasion. Directly printable non-slip films are a good solution from a time frame of several weeks.Posted: October 14, 2019||
It might seem early to some, but most retail and brand marketers are already busy working on the upcoming Christmas advertising campaigns. That's not surprising because this festive season gives a great opportunity to boost your sales. It's not only the time to eat, drink and share gifts but of course a time of top customer spending - at least if you come up with a smart marketing campaign.
Applying stickers in extreme outdoor conditions
For most retailers and brands, self-adhesive decals are a big part of their Christmas marketing campaign. After all, it is a fast and easy way to get your message out. Although the holiday season is a great time of year to advertise, you also have to deal with an unavoidable factor: the weather. It is often forgotten that when applying stickers, the temperature is essential for good adhesion. This applies to the outdoor temperature as well as the temperature of the substrate. Temperatures that are too low can negatively affect adhesion. This could turn into a problem when applying your stickers on the outside of shop windows during winter
Tips for outdoor application:
- Dry method at a minimum of 5 degrees centigrade (10 degrees centigrade would be better) is essential.
- In extremely cold temperatures, it is best to apply the decals in the afternoon, as it is warmer.
- Make sure that the surface is properly cleaned and free of grease and dust.
- The substrate should be completely dry and free of condensation, otherwise, the moisture might freeze.
- For 12-24 hours after application, it is important that the temperature does not fall below 5 degrees centigrade. During that time frame, it is also paramount for the decals not to come in contact with rain.
The best method: Applying window graphics from inside
Since many factors have to be considered when applying the window graphics from the outside, it is best to apply the graphics from the inside. Not only does this protect the ads from vandalism, it also protects them from weather exposure. Additionally, the application is a whole lot easier, since the window's temperature does not fall too low on the inside. This makes the application process a lot less complicated. In order for the ads to be seen from the outside, mirror image printing should be used. For this type of application, easy dot and window grip solutions from Neschen are excellent choicesPosted: September 20, 2019||
Since the pressure to keep up with online shopping is steadily increasing for traditional stores, creating a memorable shopping experience has become an essential setup in regaining customers.
From an appealing presentation of the goods to stunning store interiors – the shopping experience is designed down to the smallest detail. For shop fitting, digitally printable wallpapers are an ideal medium to create sophisticated store designs. Whether opting for geometric designs, advertising messages or landscape photography, almost any design can be applied to the wallpaper. This presents an enormous potential for interior designers. Depending on the product, the wallpapers feature textures just like regular wallpapers do, ranging from woodchip to linen. In terms of the compatible printing technologies, there are printable wallpapers for nearly all solutions, ranging from products for UV-curing inks to latex and solvent inks. Digitally printable wallpapers not only score with their versatility: Many products are ideal for public areas because they are washable, abrasion-resistant and durable. This makes them ideal for high-traffic areas such as shopping malls.
Security guidelines in public areas must be met
Since certain guidelines and codes must be met for public spaces, it is vital that the wallpapers have a fire classification report (in Europe according to EN 13501-1).
Sensational promotion or long-lasting wall design
Whether long-term wall design or short-term promotion – there are suitable products for any purpose. The difference: high-tack wallpapers offer powerful adhesive formulas, suited for long-term adhesion. They can also be applied to difficult substrates – like plywood, chipboard and concrete. For short to medium-term campaigns at the point of sale, there are wallpapers that can quickly be removed without any effort, leaving no residue at all. They are an ideal solution for seasonal sales or short-term discount campaigns.
Eco-friendliness – an increasingly important factor
Just as in many other sectors, the interior design market is moving more and more towards green products. In regards to printable wallpapers, this means focussing increasingly on PVC-free solutions. For Neschen, this meant developing the “Green Wall” range of wallpapers, which are not only PVC- but solvent-free.Posted: June 21, 2019||
